TAMPA, FL -- The U13G Northern Virginia Majestics surged past Rage SC 3-1 to lay claim to the Super Y-League (SYL) North American Championship title yesterday at Ed Radice Soccer Complex in Tampa, Florida. An early strike by Majestic Jewel Christian and a pair of goals from teammate Annah Lindberg proved enough to triumph over the Rage (Pennsylvania) in the hard-fought final match.

Lindberg was named SYL Tournament MVP for her efforts throughout the four-day tournament featuring the top SYL clubs in the United States and Canada.

The North American tournament title capped a perfect 17-0-0 season for Northern Virginia in the squad’s first SYL season.

The U13 victory marks the third SYL North American Championship title brought home by the Majestics. Northern Virginia previously won the U18 SYL National Championship in 2001 and U19 SYL Continental Championship in 2005.

Northern Virginia set the tempo early, driving quickly into the Rage defensive third in the opening moments of the match. A cross from Majestic Ashley Skertic set up a blast from Christian into the goal for the 1-0 Northern Virginia lead. Fifteen minutes later, Maggie Chapman sent a driven corner kick into the Rage penalty area, setting up the first goal from Lindberg and a 2-0 half-time advantage.

The Rage fell victim to the Chapman-Lindberg combination again in the second half. Midfielder Chapman fed the streaking Lindberg into the left corner of the box on a crisp pass along the ground. Lindberg collected the ball in full stride a rocketed her shot untouched into the Rage goal to cap the Majestic scoring on the day.

The Rage fought hard in the waning minutes and were rewarded for their efforts when Emily Diehl’s shot found the back of the Majestic net for only the second time in the entire 2009 season.

The Majestics were one of four unbeaten teams in the U13 Girls bracket. They posted the lone perfect 3-0-0 record in group play, including a 2-0 result against the previously undefeated Kings Soccer Academy (Cincinnati). After topping Coquitlam SC (British Columbia) 4-0 on the second day of play, Northern Virginia won a hard fought 2-0 result over the Washington Freedom to advance into the semifinals.

The upstart Majestics finished group play without giving up a goal and continued their tournament shutout downing Coastal WFC 3-0 in the semifinal match.

“After seeing a large amount of talent at all age groups throughout the weekend, I think the best term to describe our U13s is poise,” commented club General Manager Tim Schweitzer. “This special group of young ladies plays a very stylish and creative game, never appearing hurried or rattled.”

“They are highly entertaining and truly a pleasure to watch,” concluded Schweitzer.
Northern Virginia Football Club, comprised of the Northern Virginia Royals (male), Northern Virginia Majestics (female), and NOVA FC (male and female) USL teams, was represented by the a club record of nine teams in the 2009 North American Finals as well as thirty-three players in the 2009 SYL ODP Camp pool.

What is the Super Y-league?
The Super Y-League is a professionalized system that is the first step for developing youth soccer players in North America . Affiliated with US Soccer and partnered with US Club Soccer, the league is designed for talented youth players destined for professional or international careers. Northern Virginia Royals and Majestics Super Y teams benefit from the same commitment to excellence that characterizes our professional team, it is an essential step to a youth player’s “Path to the Pros.”

Which Clubs compete in the Super Y-League?
Over 100 clubs throughout North America compete annually for a National Championship. This year, the Royals and Majestics will compete in the South Atlantic Region. The clubs are as follows: Altanta Silverbacks Jrs., Carolina Dynamo, Charlotte Soccer Club, Raleigh CASL Elite Jrs., Richmond Kickers, Richmond Strikers, Triangle FC., and SC Fredericksburg.

When does the Super Y-League Season run?
The season consists of approximately 8 - 12 games. The majority of games are played during the summer from June to August, with the North American Finals being held every November. In 2007, the Northern Virginia U14, U16, and U17 Royals and Northern Virginia U16 Majestics advanced to the North American Finals.

What are the age brackets for the Super Y-League?
There will be teams from U13 through U17 for both boys and girls. The Super Y-League uses the same age brackets defined by birth date as the USYSA (Aug 1 to July 31). The age bracket you currently participate in with your club would be the age bracket you tryout for.

How do I register for tryouts?
E-mail royalsyleague@novafc.org for the Royals Super Y League teams and majesticsyleague@novafc.org for the Majestics Super Y League teams. Preliminary tryouts begin in December and final tryouts are completed in May. If you are interested in a tryout for one of the teams send your name to the e-mail listed above.

How many players will be selected for each Super Y-League team?
Depending on the quality of each tryout group 16 - 24 players will be selected. The players will compete for the 18-player roster that will be selected for each game day. We pick these numbers to fill the most competitive 18-man roster and still allow our players to take some time off during the summer months for vacations.

What is the commitment?
Training will start at the end of May and continue through the first week in August. Ideally, practices will be at least twice a week but based upon age of team and League schedule will be at the discretion of the coach.

What if they have a conflict with their club team?
We are not meant to compete with the club teams, but rather be a complement to them. In the case of a conflict, the player will be encouraged to go to their respective club’s activity; however, the final decision lies with the player and parent.

Where will the teams train and play home games?
Both training and home games will primarily take place in Prince William County; however, other facilities and fields may be used as necessary.

Who will coach and train the teams?
Northern Virginia Soccer will choose high level coaches from throughout the region and players will be trained by guest trainers during the season.

What uniforms will the Super Y-League teams use?
Super Y-League uniforms are included in the player’s fees. Each player will receive a uniform kit from Adidas - the official uniform supplier of the Royals (Super 20, Men’s PDL and Division 2) and Majestics( Super 20 and W-league teams)
